Falls of Clyde

The Falls of Clyde is the only remaining sail-driven oil tanker. She is currently moored in Honolulu as a museum ship but, due to her deteriorating condition, she is not open to the public.

Named after the Scottish landmark of the same name, she was built in 1878 by Russell and Company in Port Glasgow. She is an iron-hulled four masted ship. Classed A1, she was used for general worldwide trade. She sailed all over the world from Britain.

In 1899 she was purchased by the Maston Navigation Company and taken to Honolulu where she was registered under the Hawaiian flag. She was rigged down as a barque and used to carry general cargo from Hawaii to California. In 1907 she was bought by the Associated Oil Company where she was converted into a bulk oil tanker. Moving between other American companies she eventually ended up in Seattle.

Under threat of being sunk at Vancouver, she was purchased by Kortum and Klebingat and she was taken to Honolulu.
