John Bowes

The John Bowes was built in 1852 on the River Tyne and is considered the first successful iron steam collier. She was designed by Charles Mark Palmer and was the second vessel from the new Jarrow shipyard. She featured an iron hull, water ballast and steam screw propulsion. An auxiliary sailing rig was also fitted.

John Bowes started work in July 1852, carrying coal from the Tyne to London. Within her first week, she had done more work than two collier brigs would do in a month. As she had a long and successful career her named changed quite regularly. From 1873 she was sold numerous times to English, Irish, Scandinavian and Spanish owners.

In 1933, whilst travelling from Bilbao to San Esteban de Pravia she encountered a storm off the Bay of Biscay and foundered off Ribadesella with no casualties.
