    Abstract

In recent years the magnitude of microbiological epidemic outbreaks has reached alarming proportions. Those hardest hit are from sub-Saharan countries. Outbreaks of acute intestinal bacterial infection caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae have claimed a greater percentage of lives in sub-Saharan countries than the rest of the world combined particularly amongst women and children. There are critical factors that exacerbate the spread of cholera amongst these populations. Poverty the lack of a proper water supply and sanitation the basic hygiene practice and absence of health systems need to be addressed in order to catalyze solutions to the growing problem. This paper focuses mainly on reviewing the status of cholera and the identification of homogenous attributes within the sub-Saharan African countries which are influencing the spread of such diseases. A containment programme is proposed to enable sustainable development to take place in the region.

  • Wave-current loading on a shallow water caisson

    Authors

    Date published

    1996

    Abstract

The results of laboratory model tests were used to assess the accuracy of the API RP 2A method of predicting wave-current loading on a shallow water production caisson in extreme random waves. Model tests were conducted with a 1:20-scale model of a 36-inch diameter caisson in 50 feet of water. Tests were conducted in extreme (breaking) random waves both with and without in-line currents. Based on analysis of 138 extreme waves it was found that predicted in-line fluid velocities were 6% larger than measured values on average while predicted in-line wave forces and moments were 10% and 15% larger than measured values on average. Unfortunately not all predictions were overly conservative. Several large breaking waves produced measured forces and moments 1.5 - 2.2 times larger than predicted. For these and other breaking waves measured wave loads were strongly affected by dynamic amplification effects caused by ringing of the structure after wave impact.

    Date published

    2002

    Abstract

The linearised non-dimensional equation of small perturbation motion of HYSWAS (hydrofoil small water area high-speed ship) and its Eigen equation on foil borne is developed. The discriminance and quality criterion of dynamic stability based on the Eigen root is expressed. The influence is discussed of inertia factors dynamic stability derivatives and drafts on the dynamic stability of HYSWAS on foil borne. Several practical conclusions are obtained.

  • Field measurements on the holding power of mooring anchors

    Authors

Yoshi-hiko Maeno ; Motoyasu Ishikawa ; Yuji Kumagai et al.

    Date published

    2001

    Abstract

Field verification of the holding power of mooring anchors was conducted on a seabed composed of silt and sand located in Maizuru Bay Kyoto Japan. The observed holding power of the anchors was compared with estimates based on the current design. The holding power depends strongly on the properties of the seabed deposit the type of anchor and the duration of service. The coefficient of holding power which is defined as the ratio of the maximum holding power to the submerged weight of the anchor was introduced to examine the effects of the loading speed and angle of the mooring wire on the anchors.

  • Measurement of pressure distribution and cavity shape on conventional and highly skewed propeller model

    Authors

    Y Ukon

    Date published

    1990

    Abstract

This paper describes two kinds of highly advanced measurement techniques. One is the measurement of pressure distribution on the blades of propeller models working in uniform flow and non-uniform flow behind a wire mesh screen under non-cavitating conditions. The other is the measurement of cavity thickness distribution on the propeller blades working behind a complete ship model. Each measurement was performed on a conventional and a highly skewed propeller. Accurate measurements have provided invaluable data to validate the numerical techniques on propellers and cavitation.

Outlines are given of on board treatment of ballast water options being researched the project's timeframe the project's aims and research methods. Results of a feasibility study on a thermal plant installation on an oil tanker are presented. The feasibility study aimed to conduct a preliminary design of an apparatus to perform rapid heat treatment for the incoming ballast water of an oil tanker. Based on the results of this study and design a cost analysis is conducted along with recommendations for further development of such a system.

  • On-Line Control Algorithm Based on Reliability Methods

    Authors

    Date published

    1998

    Abstract

Strategies for decision making related to feed-back control of nonstationary slowly-varying stochastic processes are discussed. Minimization of the number of corrective actions is crucial for the class of problems at hand due to significant costs related to activation of the control itself. As an example of application control of top and bottom riser angles during drilling by repositioning of the surface vessel is looked at.

  • Study on the possibility of inland waterway transport on the Ishikari river

    Authors

    Date published

    2003

    Abstract

Although the Ishikari river has potential as an avenue for inland transport and its basin is dotted with large cities these cities generally rely on trucks to move goods to and from nearby ports. The possibility is examined of using the Ishikari River for inland waterway transport by looking at the economics involved and the river's physical suitability. First a look is taken at cost reductions through inland waterway transport. Next route considerations are addressed.

  • Wave-Induced Loads on Offshore Platform Decks

    Authors

    J Gronbech ; M J Sterndorff

    Date published

    2000

    Abstract

The present paper concerns the wave-induced loads on the cellar deck of a typical jacket platform. The wave-induced loads on a platform deck depend to a great extent on the shape of the surface and the associated particle velocities of the extreme waves. Thus the choice of the wave surface or wave theory is very important. This paper addresses the effects of wave steepness and directional spreading on the wave-induced loads. Two types of deterministic waves are considered - the traditional Stokes 5th order wave and the alternative NewWave model suggested by Tromans et al. (1991).

  • A study of the natural ventilation of offshore modules using CFD modelling and on-site measurements

    2001

    Abstract

Natural ventilation can help to maintain safe working conditions on offshore modules by diluting and dispersing gas and vapours. However by its nature its effectiveness is variable and strongly dependent on weather conditions. To understand and quantify the extent of the problem on naturally ventilated modules an approach combining both experimental measurements which were carried out on three platforms and CFD (computational fluid dynamics) applied to one platform is presented. This is followed by some discussion on a comparison of the ventilation in different areas within a module.

  • Analysis of horizontal forces acting on vertical walls of perforated breakwater

    Date published

    1999

    Abstract

There is little literature on analysing force development acting on perforated caisson and presenting liable tools for determining design parameters. Based on 2D model tests and field measurement an attempt is made to show the importance of phase difference in appearance of peak horizontal forces on the different faces of the caisson as well as the way in which total force on the whole structure is formed. First a look is taken at a 2D model study of horizontal forces. This is followed by consideration of Dieppe Field measurement.
