Since the sinking of the RMS Titanic a growing mass of bioconcretious structures called rusticles has infested the steel surfaces. Laboratory studies examined the biological export of elements from embrittled steel structures and the manipulation of extraction mechanisms by biological growth. A methodology is developed to manipulate biological growth rates and extraction mechanisms through the use of variable charges. The evaluation of rusticles has direct application to the maritime industry relating to the structural integrity of buoyed and submerged steel structures. Any breakdown will negatively impact upon the environment particularly oceanic organisms through toxic releases.
