Went ashore on Short's Island on 25 March 1892, and was floated but then broken in two and became a complete wreck Shipping news extract: telegrams from Calcutta reported Bengal's positioning favourable getting off next springs if anchors laid out during neaps and ship lightened; tug Clive sent to lighten ship and take down masts and yards; tug Dalhousie to attempt to tow vessel off - heavy surf meant could not communicate with Bengal; Bengal eventually got afloat; then broke in two.
