RMS Titanic has had more written about her than any other ship, but surprisingly there is little information directed at the modelmaker. This superb book contains all the information needed to build a highly accurate model, down to the tiniest details of the hull s rivets. The work is based on the author s remarkable 18-foot model, built to 1/48 scale, and specially commissioned for a traveling exhibition in North America. The book contains a mass of practical information on how to construct every part of the great liner and is equally applicable to a small, static, bread-and-butter display model as to a large working version. Profusely illustrated with close-up photographs, detailed drawings, and a large collection of photographs of the prototype itself, the book also contains a complete set of plans considered to be the most accurate yet drawn. With this mix of practical information, rare photographs, and highly detailed drawings the book will appeal to all Titanic enthusiasts as well as to ship modelers.

Since the sinking of the RMS Titanic a growing mass of bioconcretious structures called rusticles has infested the steel surfaces. Laboratory studies examined the biological export of elements from embrittled steel structures and the manipulation of extraction mechanisms by biological growth. A methodology is developed to manipulate biological growth rates and extraction mechanisms through the use of variable charges. The evaluation of rusticles has direct application to the maritime industry relating to the structural integrity of buoyed and submerged steel structures. Any breakdown will negatively impact upon the environment particularly oceanic organisms through toxic releases.

This paper uses a Comparative Naval Architecture approach to discuss in four sections the unusual features of the Titanic the post-Titanic ships of the 1920s and 30s modern passenger ships and risk of unanticipated levels of damage to future ships. This paper starts by comparing the Titanic to ships before and after her. The ship features that seem frivolous (a huge fake fourth stack) or bad engineering practice (shallow watertight bulkheading forward) are explained. The operational background for owner/operators to make decisions like providing an inadequate number of lifeboat seats and proceeding full speed through a scattered ice field are described. The post-SOLAS 1929 ships are compared to Titanic and modern ships. In the larger framework the paper describes the continuing evolution of passenger ships the sources of danger to them and if there still is the possibility of "iceberg-like" surprises for modern ships.
