About 8am an explosion occurred No 3 and No 4 holds. Owing inrush waters turned opposite course. Proceeded with difficulty trying to get near shore accompanied by Italian steamer Andrea Costa. At 10 fire broke out in No 3 hold. Unable to stop the water the steamer was abandoned and the crew who were taken on board Andrea Costa. At 3pm steamer sank. Crew saved.
